One of the cornerstones of western choral tradition
Established in 1791, the Sing-Akademie Berlin was and continues to be a musical trendsetter in the capital. At first glance it seems a somewhat low key affair, however on closer inspection; it becomes apparent that this ensemble is one of the cornerstones of western choral tradition, being the first mixed choir in musical history. Trivial as this may seem to the modern listener well attuned to the sound of mixed voices, the ensembles inauguration to audiences at that time was extraordinary and with its reinstatement over the past two years, audience members are once again afforded a diverse musical experience. Directed by Professor Kai-Uwe Jirka of the UdK, the Sing-Akademie music society is dedicated to advancing musical involvement in the community. The backbone of the establishment is the mixed adult choir performing oratorio and in addition there are four children’s ensembles, a family choir and a stimulating lecture series hosted by poets, composers and esteemed guests. New singers are always welcome.
